Childhood asthma leaves millions of children gasping for air and causes over two-hundred thousand hospitalizations each year, but we have no way to prevent it or cure it. In the Binational Early Asthma and Microbiome Study (BEAMS), we will determine which are the environmental microbes and their products present in the border city of Nogales, Mexico, that cause children born there to have four times less asthma than Mexican American children born in Tucson Arizona, just seventy miles north of the border. We will also determine the differences in microbial communities present in stools at both sides of the border, and the immune responses that asthma-protective microbes induce in both young children and mice, with the goal of using all this information to find ways to prevent asthma in the future.
